Your puppy’s first four months: the short version

Vaccines, stool tests, microchips and what to expect at each visit, in plain English.

A new puppy is a lot of joy and a lot of questions. Here’s roughly how the first four months go at Wagtail.

Around 8 weeks

First exam, first distemper/parvo vaccine (DHPP), a stool test and a deworming if needed. We’ll talk about food, crate training and sleep.

Around 12 weeks

Second round of DHPP, and we’ll discuss lifestyle vaccines like Bordetella and leptospirosis. Boise’s parks, rivers and trails are a good reason to ask about leptospirosis. This is a good time to start nail trims and tooth brushing.

Around 16 weeks

The final DHPP, rabies vaccine and a chat about spaying or neutering. A microchip can go in at any visit.

Between visits

Socialize gently: new people, surfaces and sounds, in the weeks before and after vaccines, but skip dog parks and busy pet stores until your puppy has had at least their second round. Our Puppy plan covers four visits, and Tess will go over all of this with you in the room.
